STUDENT SUPPORT AT THE INSTITUTE FOR INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS AT THE
UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS
The Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) at the University of Memphis
invites applications from outstanding graduate students with an interest
in various aspects of cognition and natural language processing.
Particularly students with a background in computational linguistics,
cognitive science, and cognitive psychology are encouraged to apply.
Students will be trained in cognitive science, computational
linguistics, natural language processing, and artificial intelligence.
In addition to their course work, they will work part-time on innovative
research projects, for which they receive tuition wavers and stipends.
The Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) at the University of Memphis
is an interdisciplinary center that incorporates the fields of cognitive
science, psychology, computational linguistics, computer science,
philosophy, engineering, and physics. The students and faculty are
working on a number of federally funded grants that involve the
development and testing of intelligent tutoring systems (and other
computer systems that require natural language processing). These
systems are empirically grounded in cognitive science and and
incorporate natural language and dialogue facilities, often using
conversational agents with speech generation, facial expressions, and
gestures. Graduate students in the IIS receive masters or doctoral
degrees in Psychology or in the Departments of Mathematical Sciences

enthusiastic students and giving them the opportunity to take the
responsibilities involved in academic research.
What we offer:
* A tuition waiver for full-time students in Psychology or Computer
Science.
* A minimum graduate student salary of $1000 a month (for position of 20
hrs/week)

* Opportunities to publish in academic journals
