PhD Studentship in Information Retrieval

Applications are invited for a three year, fully-funded PhD studentship
in information retrieval to start on 1 January 2004 or soon after. The
studentship is funded by the DELOS Network of Excellence for Digital
Libraries. The successful candidate will be required to work on
evaluation aspects of XML retrieval, ensuring that approaches developed
for XML retrieval are supporting users in different types of
information-seeking activities. This work will be expanding on the work
carried out by the Information Retrieval group in the context of the
INEX project: an Initiative for the Evaluation of XML Retrieval. The
successful candidate is expected to co-operate with the project's
partners, which include many European universities, research institutes
and companies. This involves writing reports, travelling to various
sites and attending meetings and events.

Applicants for the PhD studentship should have an undergraduate or
masters degree in Computer Science or related disciplines, and must
demonstrate the potential for original research in information retrieval
with strong references. They should also possess fluent programming
skills in Java, Perl or C/C++. Good knowledge of Internet and XML
technologies is also desirable.

The successful applicant will join the expanding and highly active
Information Retrieval research group at Queen Mary (QMIR), University of
London, working with Dr. Mounia Lalmas and Dr. Tassos Tombros. The group
has extensive expertise and a proven track record of high quality
research and publications.

You will be registered for a PhD in the University of London and be
subject to its standard conditions. Stipend will be at the rate for
London students, and full fees will also be payable for UK or EU
students (overseas students will need to cover the difference between
the home and overseas fees rates).

Further details about the background to the research are available from
http://qmir.dcs.qmul.ac.uk. Candidates who wish to discuss the position
can contact Dr. Mounia Lalmas (mounia@dcs.qmul.ac.uk) or Dr. Tassos
Tombros (tassos@dcs.qmul.ac.uk).

For completing the application form, please contact Carla Benjamin
(carla@dcs.qmul.ac.uk). Completed application forms with full CV and
three independent references should be returned by 10 December 2003 to
Carla Benjamin, PhD Course Administrator, Department of Computer
Science, Queen Mary, University of London, Mile End Road, London, E1
