LSU French Studies Announces
A New Economic Development Assistantship
$25,000 yearly for study of French tourism in Louisiana
The Department of French Studies at Louisiana State University,
located in Baton Rouge [approximately 70 miles northwest of New
Orleans], is pleased to announce a one-time-only research
assistantship to be awarded to a new doctoral student who will study
French tourism in Louisiana from a sociolinguistic perspective.
Funding is provided by LSU in recognition of French tourism as an
important bilingual industry which promotes Louisiana's unique French
cultural and language heritage. Funding includes $25,000 annually for
four years for a total award of $100,000, beginning in the academic
year 2004-2005; a tuition waiver and/or tuition supplement is also
expected to accompany the award. Co-directors of the assistantship
are Dr. Sylvie Dubois(Chair) and Dr. Jack Yeager (Associate
Chair). Students who are awarded an assistantship must maintain a 3.5
overall and semester GPA.

comprehensive and innovative Francophone Studies program in the
nation. French Studies was recently selected among the top twelve
programs at LSU, earning the unique distinction of âEurooePriority
Area of Excellence.âEuro The LSU French program is recognized by the
Cultural Services office of the Embassy of France in the USA as a
centre dâEuro(tm)excellence, one of only 15 such programs in the
country. Given the
importance of the French language and culture to Louisiana (nearly
three centuries of cultural and economic interaction), LSU's French
Studies program offers a unique opportunity for the study of
Francophone culture sur place.
