National Chi Nan University's Foreign Language and Literature
Department has an immediate opening available for a linguist
specializing in semantics or phonology. The Department is located in
a scenic area of central Taiwan, and has a diverse, multinational
faculty. The Department currently offers undergraduate and MA
programs in English literature, an undergraduate concentration in
linguistics, and an MA program in theoretical linguistics. Linguistic
faculty specializations include syntax, semantics, morphology,
phonology, language learnability and acquisition, and language and
mind.

The Department will consider applications for either the spring
semester of 2004 or the fall semester of 2004. Please indicate in
application cover letter which starting date the application is for.
Applicants for the spring semester should have Ph.D. already in
hand. Spring classes begin February 16. Applicants for the fall
semester should have Ph.D. by July 2004; the contract begins August
1st, with classes beginning in September. Starting rank at the
university is assistant professor, but senior applicants with
significant qualifications beyond the Ph.D. will be considered for
higher rank and are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications
will be accepted until one month after this announcement is posted or
the position is filled (whichever is later).

The successful candidate will be required to (a) conduct and publish
scholarly research, (b) supervise M.A. thesis research, (c) teach
linguistics courses at undergraduate/M.A. levels, and (d) teach
undergraduate service courses such as English composition.

In addition to specialists in phonology and semantics, the Department
is interested in linguists able to supervise research on topics in
Sinitic languages. Competence in spoken and written Chinese is
therefore highly desirable.

Materials required in the application include: 1) current resume, 2) 3
letters of recommendation, 3) Ph.D. dissertation and representative
publications, 4) photocopy of degree (if already granted), 5) graduate
school transcripts, 6) certification of employment (if currently
holding a position). 7) Any other relevant documents. For details,
please consult the official announcement, posted in Chinese at
http://web.ncnu.edu.tw/ncnu/ann/20030307hire3.htm (This web site also
