Two Positions for Research Engineers in Evolutionary Computation
University College London

We are offering two postgraduate positions to work at the interface
between evolutionary computation, neuroscience, A-Life, and ecology.
Successful candidates will become part of a research group that
evolves virtual agents within ecologically relevant virtual
environment. The aim of this research is to understand the functional
structure and behaviour of biological systems in terms of their
historical and ecological dynamics. We are particularly interested in
self-motivating and creative individuals with experience and/or
interest in genetic algorithms, A-Life/neural networks, and Bayesian
Decision Theory.

Research engineers will be supervised by Dr. R. Beau Lotto in the
Institute of Ophthalmology at UCL, whose lab also conducts research
into human and bee vision and visual ecology. They will be
co-supervised by Dr. Peter Bentley in the Computer Science department
at UCL whose expertise includes the computational evolution of complex
systems; the research programme is conducted in collaboration with
Professor Bernard Buxton also at UCL's CS department. The successful
Research Engineers will be part of the Engineering Doctorate Centre in
Virtual Environments, Imaging and Visualisation.

Research Engineers should have, or expect to gain, a good honours
degree (first/upper second, or a lower second with appropriate
post-graduate training or industrial experience). Expertise in C++
programming is essential. Candidates must establish a relevant
connection with the UK to meet EPSRC's eligibility criteria for
funding of an award. Successful applicants work closely with a
sponsoring company and will receive a tax-free stipend of at least
£12,000 per annum.
