PhD Assistantships, Interactive Learning Technologies, U. Hawai`i

The Laboratory for Interactive Learning Technologies (LILT) at
the Department of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS),
University of Hawai`i at Manoa has research assistantship
openings for at least two new new Masters or PhD students with
interests in one or more of the following areas (listed
alphabetically):
* advanced educational technologies
* asynchronous learning networks
* collaborative technologies
* computer supported collaborative learning
* human-computer interaction
* web server technologies
Successful candidates will contribute to the following
in-progress projects (both are funded by NSF through 2006):
Collaborative Representations:
Explore new ways to facilitate collaborative learning through
software tools in which users build, manipulate and discuss
representations, including disciplinary representations (e.g.,
data displays, designed artifacts), discourse representations
(e.g., threaded discussion), and knowledge representations (e.g.,
concept maps, argument maps). Empirical research will focus on
how the representations influence collaborative activity and
improve coherence and convergence of online discussions.
Subsequently the focus will shift to how these tools
can be integrated into classwork and fieldwork in K-12 school
settings. In the present opening we are particularly looking for
persons who can evaluate new technologies (or are willing to
learn how to do so) and who can work well with educators.
Hawai`i Networked Learning Communities:
Enhance a virtual community center that provides resources and
facilitates collaborations in support of K-12 science, math and
technology education in Hawaii's rural schools. Users contribute
educational resources and resource descriptions and discuss how
to use these resources in their classrooms. Virtual workspaces
support students, teachers, scientists, and other community
members collaborating on projects with a focus on "global
environmental sciences, situated locally." In the present opening
we seek someone experienced with server technologies, although
exceptional individuals with other talents will be considered.
This project has high visibility in Hawai`i public education:
candidates should be reliable and able to work well with users.
The successful candidates will be joining an interdisciplinary
team. Research assistantships on either of these projects may
focus on:
* innovative interface designs (including web interfaces, Java
applications, handheld computing),
* databases and web server technologies providing a distributed
collaborative environment,
* working with teachers to integrate the technologies into their
curriculum,
* building online communities, and
* evaluating any of the above.

Detailed position descriptions are available at
http://lilt.ics.hawaii.edu/lilt/opportunities/jobs/ . Openings
are expected for Fall 2003, and must be filled by January 2nd,
2004. The successful candidates must be admitted into one of the
above degree programs at time of hire. Potential students who are
not available until a later date should nonetheless express their
interest, as positions will become available in subsequent
semesters when incumbents graduate.
Please send inquiries to Dan Suthers, mailto:suthers@hawaii.edu .
Formal applications should include a vita, statement of research
interests, and two to three references with email addresses and
telephone numbers. Please indicate whether you have applied to a UH
Manoa program or are already in one of our graduate programs.
Although applications will be accepted until positions are filled,
fullest consideration for Fall 2003 will be given to applications
received by June 1, 2003.
