The Graduate Department of Speech-Language Pathology at the University
of Toronto invites applications for one PhD student position.

The research project is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health
Research and is entitled:

"Towards a comprehensive speech rehabilitation for glossectomy
patients: Tongue shape, tongue motility and speech intelligibility
following partial glossectomy surgery"

This research project is a co-operation with the Princess Margaret
Hospital/ University Health Network, Toronto. It will focus on the
functional consequences for speech and swallowing that are associated
with partial tongue resections in head and neck cancer patients. An
important aspect of this research project is the use of two- and
three-dimensional ultrasound for imaging of the tongue.

For this position, the Graduate Department of Speech-Language
Pathology guarantees a stipend of CAD 18,000.00 per year plus tuition
fees for the first three years. All qualified candidates are
encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will
be given priority. Closing date for the first round of applications is
June 31st, 2003. The search will continue until the position is filled
(projected starting date September 1st, 2003). Interested individuals

A qualified candidate should hold a Master's degree or a comparable
degree that qualifies him or her to do graduate research according to
the guidelines of the School of Graduate Studies of the University of
Toronto (www.sgs.utoronto.ca). Preferably, the qualifying degree
should have been obtained in a discipline such as Speech-Language
Pathology, Linguistics, Phonetics/ Speech Sciences or Psychology.

The candidate should have an interest and preferably demonstrated
experience in conducting clinical or fieldwork research. He or she
should be able to finish the research project including the thesis
defence within a period of maximally five years.
