TUNA Project (EPSRC)

Generation of Referring Expressions

A new project in Natural Language Generation and Computational
Semantics has recently been awarded to the ITRI, University of
Brighton, by the EPSRC. The project, which is nicknamed TUNA (Towards
a UNified Algorithm for the Generation of Referring Expressions), and
which involves collaboration with the University of Tilburg (The
Netherlands), aims to obtain a better understanding of the way in
which speakers/writers refer to individuals or sets of individuals, by
building computational models of reference. TUNA focuses primarily on
the generation of complex noun phrases, such as ''the women who are
neither playing the cello nor the violin''.

The project will involve computational linguistics,
(psycho-)linguistic, and logical challenges and should be of interest
to people whose intellectual home is in either of these areas. In
connection with TUNA, we offer one RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (i.e., a
postdoctoral position) and one PhD STUDENTSHIP. Enthusiastic
individuals with outstanding qualifications in one or more of the
relevant areas are invited to apply.

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP: You will need a PhD or equivalent experience in a
relevant area (typically, computer science, logic, or
(psycho-)linguistics). A basic grasp of symbolic logic is essential; a
good working knowledge of Java would be a distinct advantage. We
expect the appointment to be made on the scale of £22.191-£27.669
(roughly 32.000-40.000 Euros; $36.000-$45.000) p.a., for a period of
three years in the first instance. For an application form and details
of post, consult http://www.itri.brighton.ac.uk/vacancies/ . -
Closing date for applications for RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP: 6 June.

PHD STUDENTSHIP: You will need a good undergraduate degree in one of
the relevant areas; a good working knowledge of Java would be an
advantage. The studentship is for three years and will include fees
and a stipend of £8000 (approx. 11.500 EUROS, or $13.000) per
annum. The student will be jointly supervised between the University
of Brighton and the University of Tilburg. Applications for the
studentship should be directed to:
. More information on how to
apply formally for a studentship can be found on :
http://www.itri.brighton.ac.uk/students. - Closing date for
applications for STUDENTSHIP: 31 May.

People who are interested in one of these two vacancies are encouraged
to check us out on the web, and to make informal inquiries by email.
