Targeted PhD Scholarship in Oceanic Languages
School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies
Victoria University of Wellington
New Zealand
A PhD scholarship (NZ$20,000 per annum for 2.5-3 years, plus tuition
fees at the domestic student level) is offered in one of the following
areas. The application deadline for the scholarship is 1 October 2003.
Application forms are available from the Scholarships Office, Victoria
University, P.O. Box 600, Wellington; from
scholarships-office@vuw.ac.nz; or from
http://www.fis.org.nz/BreakOut/vuw/schols.phtml?detail+100008
after 1 August.
This scholarship is available for research on an Oceanic language
which is currently undocumented or only poorly documented. There are
reported to be some 450 languages in Oceania, the majority of which
are either undescribed or poorly described. The survival of most of
these is in doubt because of the small numbers of speakers. Because
of the number of speakers of relevant languages in the Wellington
region, it is expected that the basic work will be done with a local
consultant-informant, and that a field trip will not be required until
well into the research programme. The thesis arising from this work
is expected to provide a detailed analysis of (some aspect of) the
language studied, while also having a bearing on the characteristics
of Oceanic languages more broadly.
