The Department of Linguistics at Stockholm University invites applications =
for=20
a four year studentship for its Ph.D. programme in General Linguistics (sta=
rt=20
date: January 2004).

Applicants are expected to choose a topic for their Ph.D. theses within the
department's focal areas of research. These include typological, areal, and
diachronic/evolutionary aspects of grammar, discourse and lexicon; contact
languages; descriptions of lesser known languages. For more information se=

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree including an equivalent of the
Swedish 'magister' programme in General Linguistics. This programme focuses=
=20
on linguistic theory and comprises two years of study including the writing=
of=20
two research papers. Applicants from all countries are welcome. Knowledge o=
f
Swedish is not a formal requirement but students are strongly advised to ac=
quire=20
a working knowledge of Swedish as soon as possible (language courses are=20
offered by the university).=20

During the period of the studentship, the student is a regular employee of =
the
University. The beginning salary is SEK 17900 a month (approximately EURO 1=
970 or
USD 2370).=20

The first period of employment is for one year. The employment contract can=
=20
then be renewed for at most two years at a time, up to a total of four year=
s, or,=20
if the student accepts teaching or administrative duties at the department =
(not
exceeding 20 per cent of full time), maximally five years.=20
