PhD Research Studentships in Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science at Queen Mary, University of London=20
invites applications for up to twelve research scholarships for new PhD =
students starting in September 2004. These are available to UK, EU=20
and=20
international students and pay for tuition fees and/or a tax-free=20
maintenance grant of up to =A312,500 p.a. for 3 years. The department=20
has=20
research strengths in: logic and semantics, computer vision, risk=20
analysis and decision support, information retrieval and interaction,=20
media and communication. In addition, we especially encourage=20
inter-disciplinary research and there are earmarked studentships for=20

Funds are available to support high quality applicants in Information=20
Retrieval. Research in the information retrieval group covers a wide=20
range of topics, both theoretical and practical, including structured=20
document retrieval (e.g. XML), knowledge-based retrieval, integration=20
of=20
database and retrieval technologies (e.g. HySpirit), web retrieval,=20
personalisation, document clustering, formal and mathematical models,=20
evaluation of retrieval systems, document summarisation, information=20
seeking, multimedia retrieval, interface designs, and experimental user =
studies. The research of the information retrieval group is applied to =
the context of distance learning, digital libraries, and interactive =
TV.
