Beginning October 1, 2004, the Philosophical-Historical Faculty of the
Universit y of Basel has an opening for a Full Professor (100%)
specializing in Cognitive Linguistics and Language Acqui sition
(German and English Studies). The languages of instruction are German
and English. Possible areas of primary interest will lie within the
fields of first and second language acquisition or cognitive
linguistics (cognitive metaphor th eories, cognitive grammar,
prototype theory, research into linguistic universals ). It is also
expected that the holder of this position, along with support from
competent instructors, will provide for the teaching of a firm
foundation in th e principles of phonetics and phonology, morphology,
syntax, semantics and pragm atics. In addition, readiness and ability
to cooperate with the other language departme nts as part of the new
Bachelor and Master's programs, as well as to contribute to joint
degree programs, are required. Academic cooperation beyond the limits
o f the discipline should also be pursued. As an autonomous
university, the Univer sity of Basel depends on the participation of
professors in the University admin istration. Along with a doctorate,
a habilitation or equivalent scholarly achievement is a prerequisite
for the position. The University of Basel offers excellent working
