Technican for DERI at NUI Galway (2 Year Contract), February, 2004

Performs various personal computer related technical support functions
required for DERI research, including but not limited to:


Establish and maintain equipment, software and configurations standards.


Ensure adherence to policies relative to file and print services,
disaster recovery, virus protection, security, applications and
acceptable use.


Install configure and maintain personal computer hardware and
peripherals; performs comparative analysis and benchmark testing to
make appropriate recommendations regarding all equipment upgrades
and future purchases.


Diagnose and repair personal computer software; installs, configures
and optimizes internal components including hard drives, network
cards, controller cards, memory, peripheral devices and all related
components.


Research, test and make recommendations regarding OS and application
software for Microsoft, Macintosh, and Linux to achieve user
requirements.


Offer hands-on assistance regarding personal computer hardware,
software and training needs.


Maintain inventory and problem tracking/resolution records related
to all hardware, software and peripherals, and perform periodic
audits to ensure integrity of the data.


Offer support and training on audio visual equipment; research and
recommend modifications or additions to equipment to meet research
requirements.


Candidate should have working knowledge of industry-standard equipment
and software; demonstrate familiarity with Microsoft, Macintosh, and
Linux operating systems and business related software
suites. Experience working in a networked environment with familiarity
of online and print resources to obtain problem solutions is
preferred. Candidate should also have a working knowledge of software
and equipment troubleshooting techniques and the ability to maintain
accurate and thorough documentation. Good technical, verbal and
written communication skill required; willingness and ability to
perform in a team environment.

Applicants should hold a NCEA Certificate or its equivalent and at
least three years training, as required.

Salary: Circa ? 32K p.a.

Research Programme Development Manager, February, 2004

The Digital Enterprise Research Institute has created a new post to
help to develop its portfolio of semantic web service projects and to
ensure the effective use of the results of these projects. The post
holder will need to be able to provide support to the entire project
lifecycle, from the first discussions and ideas to the final
deliverables. They will also have to identify synergies between
projects so that results can be used efficiently and effectively to
ensure a consistent Programme of work and ongoing
development. Specifically, they will need to build partnerships with
relevant partners, prepare detailed proposals for submission to
funding authorities, negotiate contracts and provide support for
setting up projects. The post holder should also be able to conclude a
project being involved in testing, training and producing user
documentation where appropriate the post holder will also be
responsible for individual projects and produce all the necessary
reporting for these.

The role of the Research Programme Development Manager is to provide
support to the technical developments within DERI. This will involve
all aspects of the research project lifecycle and the post holder will
play various roles in the subsequent research effort. In particular,
the post holder will:



Identify possible areas of research that may be worth exploring,
with the possibility of developing these into research projects,
consistent with the research strategy of DERI. This is to ensure a
coherent research programme.


Identify funding opportunities, in particular to keep up to date
with the funding opportunities available from the European
Commission, for example, FP6.


Develop a network of contacts and strategic relationships with
relevant stakeholders, both funding and research partners. For
specific projects this will mean identifying relevant partners and
building a research group appropriate to the technical, research and
management aspects of the project.


Prepare proposals for submission to prospective partners and funding
bodies.


Be involved in the initial stages of projects to ensure that
detailed project plans are prepared and that user requirements are
captured.


Contribute to the management of individual projects where
appropriate, to ensure that deliverables are produced on time and
relevant management reports are prepared on progress, risks and
exceptions.


Help to evaluate and present the technical output from the research
projects by preparing test scripts based on user requirements
capture, be involved with user acceptance testing, produce user
documentation and contribute to any training programmes.


Carry out any other tasks needed to support the technical work
carried out by DERI.


Candidate should be educated to degree level (preferably in a relevant
field) and have at least five years experience of working in ICT
research projects, putting together proposals for research funding,
producing written documents for management as well as presenting and
communicating ideas to different audiences (management, partners and
end users), producing user requirements and end user documentation to
support technical development. Also, experience of entire lifecycle of
a research project including some project management along with
working as part of a multidisciplinary team including public and
private sector partners is essential. It is desirable that candidates
have evidence of securing research funding, have knowledge of EU FP5
and FP6 programmes. It is desirable that candidates have worked on
multiple projects simultaneously, have experience in both the private
and public sectors and have a second European language.

Applicants should hold a Degree and at least five years experience, as
required.

Salary: Circa ? 50K p.a.

Researchers and Research Fellows, March, 2004

The Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI), located at the
National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland, received significant
funding from the Science Foun-dation Ireland. Accordingly, DERI has
positions on all levels, including Ph.D., Post-Doc, Researcher and

DERI has has been successfully acquiring large European research
projects in these ar-eas such as SWWS (Semantic Web-Enabled Web
Services), DIP (Data, Integration and Processes) and KnowledgeWeb. In
addition, DERI has established a significant coopera-tion link with
the Next Web Generation Group in Innsbruck, Austria.

The institute is headed by Prof. Dieter Fensel and Prof. Christoph
Bussler. The main focus of DERI is to address the existing and future
challenges in Semantic Web Technology and Semantic Web Service
Technology. DERI emphasizes research and applied science equally on a
national as well as international level. In addition to executing
research pro-jects, DERI co-operates significantly with large,
medium-sized and small industrial part-ners on a European as well as
world-wide scope.

participate in research activities, research and industrial project
