Dear Graduate,
At the moment we are offering one PhD position in the area of Grid
computing. The successful candidate will be working as part of a team in
the WebCom-G project (http://cagraidsvr06.cs.tcd.ie/webcomg/) to build
an interoperable Grid based on the WebCom computation engine from UCC
(http://cuc.ucc.ie/).
In particular we are looking for a person to work on one of the
following 3 tasks:
1. A Sentient Grid: "A grid with a mind of it's own". This is open-ended
and could be nicely demonstrated with games or something more
socially useful like an emergency response system. One example of where
it might be useful in Grid job scheduling is where a sentient resource
can divert traffic away from itself if it becomes overloaded.
2. InfoGrid: The components of an information grid interact through a
distributed information pool. The aim of this project is to support a
variety of resource brokering and scheduling methods as well as
heterogeneity of hardware, both important goals of WebCom-G.
3. Advanced reservation: Within the grid computing world job scheduling
needs to be controlled in a reasonable manner. The problem of scheduling
is NP-complete and requires a mixture of non-linear systems and
heuristics to come up with an efficient solution.
The PhD will be from October 2004 - October 2007 at a salary of 19,050=
per annum with possible increments. Although the salary is tax free, you
must pay your own fees though which are approximately 3,800 per annum.
Please send a CV and covering letter to me if you are interested, or
just ring me for more information if you would like to see what we are
doing.
