Open Position in Web Intelligence (1 Part Time Post)

Department of Computer Science, University of Sheffield, UK, The Web
Intelligence Technology Lab (http://nlp.shef.ac.uk/wig/)

The Post:
Available for 1 Research Associate within the Project ?Armadillo for the
Arts and Humanities", funded by AHRB (the Arts and Humanities Research
Council, http://www.ahrb.ac.uk/). This post is tenable immediately for
18 months, working 20 hours per week. The position is particularly
suitable for a candidate interested in pursuing a PhD while working on a
project (internal candidate fees will be paid).

This project examines the potential of using ARMADILLO to extract
relevant information from unconnected Arts and Humanities electronic
resources. It is an attempt to answer the question of how to locate and
interpret information contained in various different online historical
research datasets simultaneously and effectively. To do this, the
project uses a substantial set of available online resources in
eighteenth-century British social history, (London focus).

The poster will offer an outline of the project background, objectives
and timetable as well as details of the applications to which ARMADILLO
has so far been applied. Particular attention will be given to the
historical sources the project will use to evaluate ARMADILLO, and the
unique methods with which it can aid information usage in an Arts and
Humanities Context.

Department of Computer Science:
This is a lively and busy academic department with thirty academic
staff, dozens of research associates, one departmental administrator,
five secretaries, seven technical staff and approximately 500
undergraduate and postgraduate students. We are in both the Faculty of
Engineering and the Faculty of Pure Science and run six undergraduate
degree courses and five MSc courses. There are six research groups ?
Natural Language Processing, Speech and Hearing, Verification and
Testing, Machine Learning, Graphics and Robotics. The Department of
Computer Science at Sheffield University is a leading European centre
for research in the area of Computational Linguistics, Language
Engineering and their use for the Future Web.

The Web Intelligence Technologies Lab (http://nlp.shef.ac.uk/wig/) has
currently 8 full members and 4 associate members. Their main research
field concerns the use of Language, Web and Knowledge Technologies for
Knowledge Management. Current fundings exceed £1.5M. Projects are
currently funded by UK research councils (EPSRC and AHRB), as well as
industrial and governmental organizations (currently Rolls Royce, the
Environment Agency). In the period 2006-2010, the group will coordinate
a large European project (called X-Media) on Cross-Media Knowledge
Management in Large Scale environments. Funding level for X-Media is
around ?13M, of which about ?4M from industry and ?9.9 from the European
Commission. Over 15 partners are involved, including large corporations
like Rolls Royce, Fiat and Tiscali. In March 2006, active fundings for
the group are expected to exceed £3M.

The WIT Lab is part of the Natural Language Processing Group
(http://nlp.shef.ac.uk). The NLP group has special expertise in a range
of areas, including information extraction, software architectures for
natural language processing, dialogue and conversational systems, and
lexicons and ontologies. The NLP Research Group is the largest group
within the Department of Computer Science, with 4 Full Professors, 1
Reader, 1 Senior Lecturer and 1 Lecturer. The group also consists of 1
Senior Research Scientist, 24 Research Associates, 10 PhD Students, 1
Research Coordinators, and 1 Research Secretary.

The group currently has 17 Grants, 8 European (3 as Coordinator) and 9 UK.

Membership of such a large and well-funded research group brings many
advantages. The group provides an excellent research environment, with
the benefits of shared expertise, opportunities for intellectual
exchange and collaboration, and a good computing, research and
administrative infrastructure. In addition, the group's success in
winning research funding provides the potential for longer-term
employment, through researchers being hired onto further grants.
