begin fall semester 2006, pending budgetary approval. This is a fiscal year
position with rank at full professor and competitive salary; the initial
appointment is for four years, and is renewable. Ph.D. in Spanish, native or
near-native fluency, a record of demonstrated leadership qualities, and an
excellent command of English are required. The field of academic specialization
is open: candidates in any area of Spanish studies with records of research,
publications, teaching, and service that are sufficiently distinguished for
tenured appointment at the level of full professor in a Doctoral/Research -
Extensive university will be considered.
The Department of Spanish has 16 full-time, tenure-track faculty members,
specializing in literature, linguistics, and pedagogy. We have approximately
300 majors and 275 minors, and a well-established Master of Arts program with 35
students. We began a Ph.D. program in fall 2003, and we now have 8 students
enrolled. The chair leads the department in developing and implementing a
vision of Spanish language, literature, linguistics and culture for the
twenty-first century. His or her role is to foster intellectual growth among
students and faculty, to encourage communication both within the department and
between the department and all levels of administration, and to monitor program
development and implementation. The chair also represents the department, the
college, and the university externally, including national and international
conferences and meetings. The position requires a participatory
leadership/management style, effective interpersonal skills, outstanding oral
and written communication skills both in English and Spanish, as well as the
ability to manage budgets and allocate resources -- human, fiscal, and physical.
