The Human Media Interaction (HMI) group and the Database group of
the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science
at the University of Twente have a strong joint background in
multimedia retrieval and human computer interaction. Funding for a 4
year PhD position is now available for a collaborative research project
on multimodal, ?how-to? question answering, involving areas such as
multimedia mining (?how-to? collection), XML retrieval, QA and human
computer interaction (?how-to? querying and presentation). The project
will start on 1 January 2006, or as soon as possible thereafter.


Requirements
------------

- candidates should have a background in one or more of the following
areas: information retrieval, speech recognition, computational
linguistics, databases and human computer interaction, demonstrated by
an academic degree in e.g., information retrieval, computational
linguistics, computer science
- good programming and scripting skills in a Linux/Unix environment

Conditions of employment
------------------------

The PhD salary starts at EUR 1813 gross per month and grows to EUR 2283
gross per month (figures based on full-time employment). Duration of
the contract: four years. Hours per week: 32-40. PhD students will be
able to participate in the Dutch research school for Information and
Knowledge Systems (SIKS,http://www.siks.nl/).
