PhD Studentships in Interactive Information Discovery and Delivery NICTA
Victoria Research Laboratory, University of Melbourne, Australia

National ICT Australia (NICTA) is Australia's Centre of Excellence in
Information and Communication Technology. The NICTA Interactive
Information Discovery and Delivery Project is based in the Department of
Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Melbourne.

This project has funding for PhD scholarships in the following areas:

o information extraction, question answering and summarisation
o geospatial, temporal and multimedia databases, indexing, and retrieval
o natural interaction, dialogue, speech, multimodality, user modelling
o rhetorical structure, document structure and layout
o statistical machine learning as applied to natural language processing
o high performance computing for large-scale information retrieval
o language technology integration with mobile computing devices

Project participants include: Timothy Baldwin, James Bailey, Steven Bird,
Lawrence Cavedon, Baden Hughes, Alistair Moffat, Nicola Stokes, Peter
Stuckey, and Egemen Tanin.

Stipends of up to AUD$24,000 per annum (tax free) are available for
high-achieving students commencing a Masters by research or a PhD. In some
cases a fee remission scholarship may be offered to overseas students. For
students who successfully obtain other scholarships, such as the Australian
Postgraduate Award (APA), NICTA funded top-up scholarships may be available.

Applications for immediate commencement, or commencement by 31 January
2006, may be made at any time up to the closing date of 31 October 2005.
