2 positions open for experienced researchers in an EU-funded dialogue
project at the University of Potsdam, Germany.
The University of Potsdam invites applications for two positions for
'Experienced Researchers' -- i.e., people with a PhD, or else with 4
or more years of full-time, post-graduate research experience -- to
work on `you what?', a 2-year project that aims to improve the way
spoken dialogue systems deal with understanding problems, by enabling
such systems to produce and understand meaningful and contextually
appropriate clarification requests (e.g. ``New York City?' instead of
``I'm sorry, can you repeat?')
The project will explore ways to combine statistical and symbolic
methods to detect understanding problems, so knowledge of such methods
is required.
The ideal candidate would have:
- knowledge of statistical approaches to NLP in general, and
to processing dialogue in particular
- knowledge of symbolic approaches, logics, theorem provers,
etc.
- experience with spoken dialogue systems
- knowledge of automatic speech recognition algorithms and
experience with existing implementations / packages
- good programming skills
- some teaching experience (there will be a light teaching load;
probably in the form of co-supervising diploma students working in
the project and participating in a project-related
seminar)
As we are looking for two candidates, these qualifications can be
distributed over the candidates; i.e., one candidate might be stronger
on ASR/statistical methods and the other on theoretical dialogue
modelling.
Candidates cannot be German nationals or have resided in Germany
during the last 3 years, due to restrictions imposed by the funding
program (FP6 Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge), which aims at
increasing the mobility of researchers (there are some exceptions;
please contact us if in doubt).
