equivalent competence) of Spanish to help them develop Spanish speech
synthesis technology.

The work will involve writing test sentences for synthesis, providing
analysis of linguistic features such as part-of-speech, evaluating
synthesised speech in terms of natural and appropriate intonation and
checking and updating phonetic transcriptions of Spanish words in a dictionary.

The successful candidate will have experience in transcribing Spanish using
a phonetic alphabet such as IPA or SAMPA. They should also have a basic
understanding of linguistic concepts such as phrase structure, syntactic
constituents, syllable structure, sentence and word stress and intonation.

The ideal candidate will also have experience working with a UNIX-style
operating system (eg. Linux) and be able to list, view, edit and save files
using a command-line interface. Experience with an editor such as Emacs
would be an advantage.

The work requires someone who is able to work independently to an agreed
schedule. Attention to detail will be vital. Good written and spoken
English communication skills will also be required as the work will involve
consulting with researchers or other experts and providing regular progress
updates.

The job is based in Cambridge and is offered on contract basis. The
contract will initially be for 3 months with the possibility of this being
extended on a monthly basis.
