COMPUTER PROGRAMMER (REF HUM/092/05)

Starting salary circa GBP 27,000 p.a.

Applications are invited from candidates with a specialisation in
databases (open source) and an interest in GIS systems.The post is
for a fixed term of three years, beginning on 1st June 2005 and
ending on 31st May 2008 (pending confirmation of the research award
by the ESRC).

The project is concerned with the creation of a web-based educational
and research resource in linguistics, documenting the structures of
the European dialects of the Romani language and their geographical
distribution. Much of the data have already been archived; additional
data elicitation and archiving will take place during the lifetime of
the project, mainly in central and eastern Europe. The web resource
will involve the creation of a database and of a web-based user
interface. The latter will allow queries into the database and the
display of data in various formats, including the distribution of
symbols on a map showing the locations of dialects. Tone
documentation (sound files) will also be included. The project is
coordinated by Professor Yaron Matras at the School of Languages,
Linguistics and Cultures. The project team will include a Data
Administrator and several postgraduate student assistants. Close
collaboration is envisaged with several other research projects in
linguistics.
