Faculty of Arts/Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG)
announces the following positions, pending final (financial) approval:
Six Ubbo Emmius Graduate Studentships

* 6 PhD positions in Linguistics

The Ubbo Emmius positions (all the PhD positions) are open only to foreign
applicants. Dutch citizens are not eligible due to tax restrictions.

The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen

The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG) is a research
institute within the Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen. It
embraces all the linguistic research in the faculty. A considerable number
of the researchers participate in the Center for Behavioral and Cognitive
Neurosciences (BCN), and in the Landelijke Onderzoekschool Taalwetenschap
(LOT). Within the CLCG there are six research groups: Syntax/Semantics,
Discourse and Communication, Language Variation and Change, Computational
Linguistics, Neurolinguistics, and Language and Literacy Development over
the Life Span. There are graduate students working in all of these groups.

The following positions are available, pending final approval:

* two PhD positions in Language Development;
* two PhD positions in Dialectology;
* one PhD position in Computational Discourse Analysis; and
* one PhD position in Computational Grammar

All of the positions should begin by Sept. 1, 2005. They all require
residence in Groningen, 38 hours/week research, and the stipends must
result in a PhD dissertation.

Remuneration:

* Ubbo Emmius Stipends: The Ubbo Emmius graduate students receive stipends
of gross 1370 per month, normally with slight cost-of-living increases in
later years. Graduate student fellows receive a contract for one year
extendible for three further years subject to evaluation after the first year.

Your profile (studentships):

* a MA degree in Linguistics or a related field such as Computer Science,
Psychology, etc (depending on the project)
* preferably research experience in the relevant field
* able to work independently
* interest in interdisciplinary research
* excellent record of undergraduate and Master's level study
* willing to learn Dutch
* see specific projects for additional desiderata, differing per project
