One position open for an experienced researcher in an EU-funded
dialogue project at the University of Potsdam, Germany.
The University of Potsdam invites applications for a position for
an ``Experienced Researcher'' -- i.e., someone with a PhD, or else
with 4 or more years of full-time, post-graduate research experience
-- to work on a 2-year, EU-funded project that aims to improve the way
spoken dialogue systems deal with understanding problems (their own,
and those of the human user).
The project will explore ways to combine statistical and symbolic
methods to detect understanding problems and to decide on strategies
for clarifying them. The successful candidate will work together with
one other experienced researcher who has a background more in
theoretical dialogue modelling; for the advertised position we are
searching for a candidate with a background more in speech processing.
The ideal candidate would have:
- knowledge of automatic speech recognition algorithms and
experience with existing implementations / packages
- experience with spoken dialogue systems
- good programming skills
- knowledge of statistical approaches to NLP in general, and
to processing dialogue in particular
Also a plus would be:
- some teaching experience (there will be a light teaching load;
probably in the form of co-supervising diploma students working in
the project and participating in a project-related
seminar)
- knowledge of symbolic approaches, logics, theorem provers,
etc.
Candidates cannot be German nationals or have resided in Germany
during the last 3 years, and must be citizens of an EU-member state,
due to restrictions imposed by the funding program (FP6 Marie Curie
Transfer of Knowledge). (There are some exceptions; please contact us

Potsdam is in easy commuting distance).
