The Department of Cognitive Science in the College of Arts & Sciences
at Case Western Reserve University invites applications for one or more
faculty positions. Although rank is open and commensurate with
qualifications, we prefer to appoint at the rank of assistant
professor. This new department will begin admitting undergraduate
students to the major in Fall, 2006. It will be grounded in sciences of
the mind and will focus especially on higher-order cognitive operations
that distinguish human beings from other species and that emerge
clearly in final stages of the record of our descent. The central
concern of the department will be study of the unique human capacity
for imagination and creativity, including the distinctive human
capacity to develop and exploit culture for innovation. The department
will connect research and teaching activities across the College of
Arts and Sciences, the other schools of the university (including
Medicine, Engineering, Law, and Management), and the many cultural
institutions adjacent to the university (including the Cleveland Museum
of Art, the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Cleveland Institute of
Music, the Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art, the Cleveland
Orchestra, the Cleveland Clinic, the University Hospitals, and the
Cleveland Playhouse). There are rich possibilities for integration with
new initiatives in media, technology, and networked arts and
humanities. The programmatic and research agendas of these institutions
are entering an era of unprecedented collaboration, and the Department
of Cognitive Science is charged to serve as a principal designer and
leader of these collaborations. The successful candidate will be
expected to develop a strong program of funded research, interact with
other departments and schools, help design and deliver the
undergraduate and graduate programs in cognitive science, and assist
the department in meeting college and university goals, including
undergraduate teaching in our university-wide undergraduate program of
liberal education, SAGES. For appointment at one of the professorial
ranks, applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent by date of
appointment and have, relative to career stage, a distinguished record
of scholarship, service, and teaching.

Electronic applications only, consisting of a letter of application, a
curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests and plans, a
statement of teaching experience, and the names, addresses, and email
addresses of four referees to whom we may write. Applications should be
sent to Professor Merlin Donald (merlin.donald@case.edu), Founding
Chair of the Department, copied to search@case.edu. Complete
applications received by November 30, 2005 will receive full
consideration. Case Western Reserve University is committed to
diversity and is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer.
Applications from women or minorities are especially encouraged. Case
has received an NSF ADVANCE grant to increase the participation of
women in science and engineering.
