Postgraduate student award, Development Studies.

In 2004 the Departments of Economics and Education were successful in
an application to Development Co-Operation Ireland (affiliated to
Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs) for a one year
Development Education Grant. In 2005, after a successful first year,
funding was given for a further three years for the various
Development Education initiatives started in 2004(see
www.tcd.ie/economics/development_studies for more details). We are now
looking to improve and scale-up our current projects. Our projects
include:

1. A broad curriculum course called ‘The Challenge of Development’. This course looks at various aspects of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
2. The Trinity MDG Lecture Series. This is a series of evening lectures given by outside speakers from NGOs, governmental organisations, international organisations and academics.
3. An interactive web site that facilitates the teaching/lecture series.
4. Plans for the development of extramural online development education courses (with a target audience outside the student body).
5. The creation of a Development Education Strategy Group to review current development education initiatives in Trinity.

We are now looking for a research student to help with various aspects
of these development education initiatives (initially for a year). The
ideal candidate should have the following:

- A strong and proven interest in issues related to the developing
world (though an economics background is not strictly necessary).

- Knowledge of, or desire to, acquire knowledge of basic web skills

- Some teaching experience would also be an advantage. The envisaged
duties do not involve direct teaching, all of them, however, are in
some way related to education delivery.

Above all, the candidate must be enthusiastic, resourceful and able to
work independently. He or she must also have a strong desire to
broaden awareness of the issues faced by the developing world to both
the current Trinity student body as well as the general public
(through the Trinity MDG Lecture series and the website).

We are looking to appoint a suitable Trinity research student to fill
this assistantship position by the beginning of Hilary term 2006. If
you are interested please send a c.v. and brief explanation of why you
are applying to Dr. Dylan Sutherland in the Department of Economics
(Dylan.Sutherland@tcd.ie). Pay and work hours will be in line with
those offered to other teaching/research assistantships in the
Economics Department
