Language and Intercultural Studies, DCU

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to work on a project
that will be jointly supervised by the School of Applied Language and
Intercultural Studies (SALIS), Dublin City University (DCU), Ireland
and Symantec Ireland. The research project is in the domain of Machine
Translation and Controlled Language. The project will examine user
reception and acceptance of machine-translated Symantec "virus
alerts".

The project is jointly funded by Symantec (Ireland) and Enterprise
Ireland. A stipend of 18, 200 euro per annum will be paid for two
years (with a possible extension of one additional year) and fees will
be paid for the Research Assistant to enrol as a post-graduate
research student in DCU. It is expected that the Research Assistant
will work towards an MA or, preferably, a PhD, which will be based on
the research project.

Applicants are expected to have:

Master's degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. translation studies or
computational linguistics) - at least second class honours or
equivalent (applicants with at least second class honours or
equivalent Bachelor's degree may also be considered) an excellent
command of written English as well as one or more of French, German,
Spanish, Japanese very good research and academic writing skills an
in-depth knowledge of translation tools including, translation memory
and machine translation. Knowledge of research in controlled languages
is an advantage.

Knowledge of statistical research methods, while not necessary, is an
advantage Applicants are expected to aim for a PhD qualification

Applications should consist of the following:

(1)A one-page cover letter stating your suitability and interest in
the project

(2)A one-page CV, which should include the names and contact details
of two referees, one of whom has to be an academic referree

(3)A copy of the candidates Master's or Bachelor's degree parchment
or, if this has not yet been received, the most recent transcript of
results.

Selected candidates will be interviewed either at DCU or, where
necessary, by telephone. DCU cannot enter into any correspondence on
