Job Title: Research Assistant
Division/Program: Language and Literacy
Hours per week: Half time to full time
Salary: $32,556 to $46,032 FTE per annum, depending upon qualifications
Position Available: Immediately; extends through August 31, 2006, with possibility of renewal.
The Center for Applied Linguistics is a leading research and service organization that specializes in language learning, literacy, and a full range of language and culture issues.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Support research on heritage language communities in the United States and advanced-level programs for adult learners of English as a second language.
Research
Identifies locations, sizes, composition, and other salient features of heritage language communities in the United States, with special focus on the East Coast and the Pacific Northwest, targeting in particular speakers of Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Pashto, Persian, and Urdu.
Provides support for research projects on university-level English for professional purposes programs and materials and other topics as assigned.
Data/information management
Develops management system for information collected on heritage language communities.
Assists with development of management system for information collected on university-level English for professional purposes programs and materials.
Performs other information management tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's degree in related field and three years of related experience or Master's degree with one year of related experience are required.
Experience: Must have solid experience with Web-based research and the use of database software. Experience in teaching English to adult nonnative speakers and experience with heritage language communities preferred but not required. Must be able to work independently, prioritize work on several projects at the same time, and give attention to detail.
