We are looking to hire a research fellow for a new
project 'Atlas.txt' at University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK. The main
aim of the project is to generate textual descriptions of geo-referenced
statistical data such as census data for visually impaired users. This
project is part of our effort to develop NLG techniques for summarising
numerical data. In an earlier project SumTime, we developed techniques
for summarising time series data. The most promising product of this
project was the SumTime-Mousam system which was deployed in the industry
for producing draft marine weather forecasts for offshore oil rigs in
the North Sea. These techniques are currently being extended in the
ScubaText and BabyTalk projects for summarising time series data from
scuba dive computers and neonatal intensive care units respectively. In
the new project, Atlas.txt the input data are geo-referenced or spatial.
With the recent advances in GIS, spatial data is ubiquitous and NLG
systems that summarise spatial data have high impact on society (for
example, the RoadSafe work on generating advisory text for road
maintenance vehicle routing). Currently, spatial data is presented to
users as overlays on geographical maps. Such visual displays are
inaccessible to visually impaired users. If textual descriptions of such
spatial data are automatically generated, then visually impaired users
can listen to these texts using the existing screen readers (such as
JAWS). In addition to improving access to spatial data for visually
impaired users, textual descriptions of spatial data could be useful for
sighted users as well. In the Atlas.txt project we want to integrate
textual descriptions with map displays. We believe that integrating
textual descriptions with visualizations is an exciting prospect for
both NLG and Information Visualization communities.
