Job Title: Research Assistant

Division/Program: Language Education and Academic Development Division (LEAD)

Hours per week: Full Time

Salary: $42,000 to $50,000 FTE per annum, depending upon qualifications

Position Available: immediately

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Work as part of a team on research, curriculum development, and professional development projects in the areas of sheltered instruction and ESL/bilingual education.

Primary Responsibilities
-Assist in developing literacy curriculum for first through eighth grade language minority students
-Assist in planning, coordination, and implementation of research and professional development related to the development of literacy and content area knowledge in language minority children and youth.
-Present at training sessions, workshops and conferences
-Collect and enter data, maintain project files
-Assist in writing, production, and dissemination of products through a variety of media
-Correspond with co-researchers, other colleagues, project teachers, and others as needed
-Assist in proposal development
-Respond to inquiries about projects
-Other tasks as assigned.

NOTE: Some travel will be required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Must have at least an M.A. in ESL or related discipline.

Experience: Must be knowledgeable about language and literacy
instruction in K-8 ESL or bilingual classrooms in the U.S.; have good
writing (in English), organizational, and Excel database skills; and
be able to work independently. Elementary level teaching experience
is preferred.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Center for Applied Linguistics is a leading
research and service organization, specializing in language learning,
literacy, and a full range of language and culture issues. We are
seeking a Research Assistant/Dissemination Coordinator for the
Language Education and Academic Development Division to assist with
research activities and disseminate research conducted for the
National Research and Development Center for English Language
Learners.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Coordinates dissemination of research findings and research center news
-Writes articles, announcements, and Web copy
-Composes newsletter
-Builds subscriber database
-Assists in developing curriculum materials
-Coordinates and assists with research activities
-Participates in other activities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: M.A. in ESL or a related discipline.

Experience: Must have training and experience in journalism or
dissemination, expertise in second language learning, and at least
five years of teaching experience in the United States with English
language learners preferably at the elementary or middle school
level. Must have experience developing curricula at these levels and
administering reading and language arts assessments. Experience
providing professional development in the areas of literacy, language
arts and/or content area instruction is desirable. Must have the
ability to prioritize work on several tasks at the same time and give
attention to detail. Must be able to work independently and write well
for publication.
