San José State University
Subject to Budgetary Approval
Assistant Professor, Tenure Track Position in Computational Linguistics
Job Opening ID (JOID): 013046

Qualifications:

PhD in linguistics with a specialization in Computational
Linguistics. ABDs may be considered if doctorate is completed by
August 2008. Required: Applicants must present evidence of teaching
ability, scholarly activity and awareness of and sensitivity to the
educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been
gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other
comparable experience.

Responsibilities:

The Department of Linguistics and Language Development at SJSU offers
a BA and MA in Linguistics and an MA in TESOL. It is currently looking
for a linguist to teach courses in computational linguistics, as well
as to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in linguistics to
students in the above programs and in general education courses. The
normal teaching load is four three-unit courses per semester plus
advising and committee work (which includes student recruitment). The
department is in the process of obtaining permission to establish the
SJSU Center for Human Language Technology, an Organized Research Unit,
which could provide course reduction to develop activities of the
center. Faculty members could also reduce their teaching load by
successfully applying for and securing grants from on-campus and/or
outside agencies.

A pattern of demonstrated excellence in teaching and continued
scholarly, professional activity, including publications in refereed
venues, and fund raising/grant activity, will be required for tenure
and promotion. Candidate must address the needs of a student
population of great diversity - in age, cultural background,
ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation - through course
materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting Date: August 21, 2008

Eligibility:

Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the
United States.

Application Procedures:

For full consideration send a letter of application, curriculum vitae,
statement of teaching interests/philosophy, evidence of teaching
effectiveness, research plans, any representative publications, and at
least three original letters of reference with contact information by
