Summary description of the post-doc position
The research project which the post doctoral researcher will be asked to
participate concerns cross-linguistic research on spatial expression and
thus situates itself within a larger ongoing typological research
project (conducted by M. Lemmens at Lille and D. Slobin at Berkeley).
More specifically, the research concerns an analysis of expressions for
static location (essentially location and placement verbs) and the
co-verbal gestures that accompany them. As such, this research
constitutes an important complement to existing research on verbs of
motion. The languages studied at the moment are English, French, and
Dutch. The research is based on videotaped descriptions (by native
speakers) of 5 pictures from a children's book.
