MSc in Forensic Speech Science, University of York, UK

The University of York is one of the UK's leading higher education
establishments. The MSc in Forensic Speech Science is hosted by the
Department of Language and Linguistics Science. The degree programme is both
theoretical and practical, providing a thorough grounding in the application
of linguistics, phonetics, acoustics and sociolinguistics to criminal
investigations. The focal areas of study are speaker comparison (a.k.a.
speaker identification), analysis of questioned utterances (determining what
was said on problematic recordings), speaker profiling, enhancement and
authentication of recordings, and voice line-ups. Students will gain direct
experience of analysis of criminal speech recordings, and will also
undertake research in aspects of forensic speech science.

The programme is delivered in conjunction with one of the world’s leading
forensic speech laboratories, JP French Associates (www.jpfrench.com).
Students will have the opportunity to work closely with members of the
laboratory during the taught and research components of the MSc, and through
visits to the laboratory.

The MSc is aimed at
(1) students with a background in phonetics, acoustics or sociolinguistics
who are considering doctoral research or careers in fields such as speech
technology or the law;
(2) professionals who encounter spoken materials in criminal contexts,
especially those engaged in the law, government and law enforcement work or
branches of forensic science;
(3) professional speech and language analysis organisations, as a training
programme for practitioners.
