Research Position: Semantic Web Technologies
(Temporary appointment, up to 2 years - Vacancy ID:4292)

The Open University's Knowledge Media Institute
(KMi) has an opening for a Research Assistant to
undertake the design and development of semantic
web technologies in the context of the EU-funded
NeOn project - see http://www.neon-project.org.
The successful applicant will join an
internationally leading research group, headed by
Prof Enrico Motta, which is pioneering the
development of a new class of applications able
to exploit the increasingly large amounts of
semantic markup, which are becoming available on
the Semantic Web. He or she will be expected to
contribute to the design and development of a new
infrastructure for semantic web applications,
which is centred around the Watson Semantic Web
Gateway, http://watson.kmi.open.ac.uk. In
particular the job will require to design and
implement novel algorithms for ontology
evaluation and ranking, which can be effectively
used together with the Watson platform, to
support intelligent search for information on the
Semantic Web, both in response to manual requests
from human users and also in response to queries
from software agents.

Experience in semantic technologies is essential
for this vacancy. Experience in language and web
technologies will also be advantageous.

The appointment will be made on the Salary Scales
for Academic and Research Staff (Academic Grade 1
or 2), ranging from £25,134 - £32,796 pa
depending on qualifications and experience.
Appointment on Grade 2 will require a PhD or
three years equivalent in quality of achievement.
