Job Rank: Lecturer

Specialty Areas: Pragmatics

Description:

Lectureships in Pragmatics (two posts)
I Lectureship in Pragmatics
II Lectureship in Experimental Pragmatics and/or Infant Communicative
Development

Applications are invited for two early-career lectureships in pragmatics.
One lectureship is in theoretical pragmatics (and its interface with
semantics and philosophy of language); the other is in experimental
pragmatics and/or infant communicative development. These are currently
offered under the auspices of the Department of Phonetics and Linguistics
which is, however, about to be integrated into a larger division at UCL
including Linguistics, Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Speech Sciences
and Human Communication Sciences.

Applicants must have a PhD in pragmatics or a cognate discipline and a
record of high-quality research commensurate with the stage of their
academic career. They must be committed to developing a programme of
original research - in theoretical pragmatics, in the one case, and in
experimental and/or developmental pragmatics, in the other case - which
will give rise to PhD projects and attract external funding.

The newly appointed lecturers will contribute to the department's teaching
at both undergraduate and graduate levels, specifically BA and MA courses
in pragmatics, semantics-pragmatics and psycholinguistics, and to the
supervision of long essays and dissertations. They will also contribute to
administration.

The positions, which are available from 1 September 2007, are permanent
(with a three-year probationary period). The successful candidates will
need to be in post by 1 October 2007. The appointments will be made at
Grade 7 of the UCL salary range, which is currently £29,138 - £31,840 p.a.
plus £2,497 London allowance (pay award pending), dependent on experience.
