The group in Empirical Methods in Syntax at the Linguistics Department of
the University of Potsdam, Germany, is seeking one doctoral-student
researcher to work on an experimentally-centered project involving the
processing of information structure in Hindi.
The starting date is approximately August 2007; earlier start dates are also
possible.
Prerequisites are a good background in linguistic theory (particularly
syntactic theory in any flavor, and semantics), and native or near-native
knowledge of Hindi. In addition, practical experience in experimental
research, such as reaction time studies and eyetracking, is highly
desirable; failing such an experimental background, a desire to acquire
these skills is necessary. Knowledge of German is not required.
The successful candidate will work in project C6 'Empirical and corpus
investigations of information structure in Hindi'
within the Sonderforschungsbereich 632 (Collaborative Research Centre
'Information structure', http://www.sfb632.uni-potsdam.de/), funded by
German Research Foundation (www.dfg.de). For further information on the SFB,
visit the web address above.
The position is temporary, with a contract extending over three years, with
the possibility of an additional year depending on various factors.
The salary and social benefits are determined by the German pay scale for
state employees (Entgeltgruppe: 13 TV-Länder, Tarifgebiet Ost; formerly
BAT-O IIa) and amounts to approximately EUR 1500 per month, working
half-time. The exact salary amount varies depending on the highest academic
degree attained by the applicant, marital status, age, and so on.
The candidate will be expected to enroll inthe PhD program at the Institute
for Linguistics at the University of Potsdam.
The Empirical Methods group offers a very interactive academic environment,
with intensive student-faculty interaction and a relatively large group of
highly motivated researchers engaged in experimental research and cognitive
modeling. There are strong research ties with other areas within
Linguistics, such as Clinical Linguistics, Computational Linguistics,
Phonology, and Syntax, and with the Department of Psychology at the
University of Potsdam. In addition, close research collaborations are
maintained with the Department of Psychology, Michigan, and Computational
Linguistics, Michigan State University, in the USA.
The University of Potsdam is located in the exquisite city of Potsdam, which
is approximately 30 km from, and easily reachable by car and express train,
the vibrant capital of Germany, Berlin.
The University of Potsdam is an equal opportunity employer.
Interested candidates are invited to send, via email, their application
materials (a CV, [links to] sample publications, a one-page statement of
research interests and two or three references). Applications received by
July 30, 2007 will receive fullest consideration; however, the position will
remain open until filled.
Inquiries should be sent to the email given below.
