Faculty of Arts, Radboud University Nijmegen
Vacancy number: 23.14.07
Closing date: 15 June 2007
Maximum salary: ? 2.387,- per month, based on full-time employment
Job description
Sound to Sense (S2S) is a Marie Curie Research Training Network
involving collaborative speech research amongst 13 universities in 10
countries. 18 Training Fellowships are available in S2S, of which 12
are for PhD students and 6 are for postdocs (or scientists with
equivalent experience). In Nijmegen, there is now a job opening for a
PhD student in a project entitled Automatic methods to identify fine
phonetic detail; corpus-based probabilistic work. This project
investigates the role of fine phonetic detail (FPD) in (human) speech
processing and in lexical representations. The project will focus on
the automatic detection of FPD by means of existing statistical
learning approaches (HMM, ANN) and by means of new statistical
learning techniques, such as Dynamic Bayesian networks, and
multi-stream architectures. Moreover, the project will trace the
consequences of fine phonetic detail in speech production and
comprehension, taking into account a word's a-priori lexical
probability estimated from spoken corpora, its probability compared to
its competitors in the lexicon, and its probability with respect to
its context.
Requirements
The successful candidate has a Master degree in linguistics,
phonetics, psychology, or computer science and has a strong affinity
with computational modelling. S/he is NOT a resident of the
Netherlands (an individual who has resided in the Netherlands for more
than 4 years immediately prior to appointment is regarded as a
resident) and is willing to work in at least one other country in the
S2S network for up to 30% of the duration of the appointment.
Organization
The project will be carried out within the Centre for Language and
Speech Technology (CLST), a research unit within the Faculty of Arts.
Conditions of employment
Duration of the contract: 3 years. The PhD student will receive an
initial contract for the duration of one year, with the possibility of
prolongation for another 2 years.
The PhD students will be assigned to the function profile 'PhD
Student' (UFO system).
The gross salary starts at ? 1.956,- per month and increases to ?
2.387 per month in the third and final year.

Vacancy for a post-doctoral researcher at the Center of Language
Studies (CLS), Faculty of Arts, Radboud University Nijmegen
Vacancy number: 23.15.07
Closing date: 15 June 2007
Maximum salary: ? 4.190,- per month, based on full-time employment

post-doctoral researcher in a project entitled Lexical decoding of
speech using subphonemic features. This project addresses the lexical
coding and decoding of fine phonetic detail by means of probabilistic
subphonemic feature representations that are automatically derived
from the speech signal. The main aim is to improve computational
modeling of human speech processing using key techniques from
automatic speech recognition. The starting point will be existing
models of automatic speech recognition and human speech processing.
The project will involve corpus-based research and will be
supplemented with psycholinguistic experimentation, both focusing on
the role of fine phonetic detail in lexical competition in Dutch and
English.
Requirements
The successful candidate has a PhD in linguistics, phonetics,
psychology, computer science, or related field and has a strong
affinity with computational modelling. S/he is NOT a resident of the
Netherlands (an individual who has resided in the Netherlands for more
than 4 years immediately prior to appointment is regarded as a
resident) and is willing to work in at least one other country in the

Organization
The project will be carried out within the Centre for Language and
Speech Technology (CLST), a research unit within the Faculty of Arts.
Conditions of employment
Duration of the contract: 22 months. The post-doctoral researcher will
be assigned to the function profile 'post-doc' (UFO system). The gross
salary is maximally ? 4.190,- per month in the second and final year.
