the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, located at the Berlin-Brandenburg
Academy of Sciences in Berlin, Germany is looking for a
SOFTWARE ENGINEER (fulltime)
The start date is April 1, 2008. The duration of the contract will be 2
years with a potential extension of 3 years.
Job Definition:
Conceptual design and programming of a database management system to
administer standoff markup for interactive online annotation facilities.
Qualifications:
- strong background in computer science proven by a degree (Diplom,
MSc or equivalent) in computational linguistics, computer science or
equivalent post-graduate experience.
- experience in modelling and optimization of relational databases
(RDBM) and native XML databases (XML-DB) and associated query languages
(SQL, XQuery).
- strong skills in at least one of the programming languages C or C++
- strong skills in at least one of the scripting languages Python or Perl
- experience in software development on Linux systems
Salary and social benefits are according to Germany's public sector
BAT-O IIa scale, currently between 2900 and 3590 Euro per month (before
taxes), depending on formal qualifications. We offer an active,
stimulating research environment in an interdisciplinary team of
computational linguists, humanists and computer scientists. Working
languages are English or German.

About the project:
The goal of the German Text Archive (Deutsches Textarchiv, DTA), funded
by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, is to digitize a core corpus of
relevant German texts dating from 1650 until 1900. The texts will be
annotated in XML according to the Text Encoding Initiative Guidelines
and will be accessible via the Internet as an interactive archive. The
German Text Archive maintains cooperations with German and European
initiatives such as eSciDoc , D-Grid
, Clarin and TextGrid
.
