I have funding for a postdoc position at the Rensselaer
Department of Cognitive Science. The positions starts this
summer, though there is some flexibility.
One of our lab's goals is to develop a system that can combine
linguistic and non-linguistic reasoning to achieve a "deep"
understanding of complex utterances. Our approach, motivated in
part by work in cognitive linguistics, is to develop a framework
that represents syntactic, semantic and non-linguistic structures
using the same conceptual framework.
Applicants for the position should have knowledge and experience
in one of the following and a willingness to learn a bit about
the rest: algorithms for inference, grammar and formalizations of
common sense reasoning.
RPI is a top-tier research university. The Cognitive Science
department has identified the PhD program and research as its
primary missions. The department is conducting research in a
number of areas: cognitive modeling, human and machine learning,
multi-agent interactions and social simulation, neural networks
and connectionist models, human and machine reasoning, cognitive
engineering, etc.
RPI is located in historic Troy NY, in the Hudson River Valley,
approximately 5 miles North of Albany, NY. It is 3-hrs south of
Montreal, 2.5-hrs west of Boston, and 2-hrs north of New York
City, to which Amtrak runs several trains daily. The Albany area
is notable for any things, including its affordable housing,
cultural events (e.g., the famed Saratoga Performing Arts
Center), and proximity to outdoor recreation (e.g., hiking/skiing
in the Adirondack, White, Green, and Berkshire Mountains).
Please respond to this email if you are interested in the
position.
Thank you,
-Nick
