Center for Mind / Brain Sciences, University of Trento
PhD Position In Situated Language Use
A number of PhD positions in computational linguistics and computational
cognition for 2008/09 will be offered by CLIC:
http://clic.cimec.unitn.it/
the Language, Interaction and Computation Laboratory of The Center for Mind /
Brain Sciences, a recently created University of Trento institute devoted to the
study of cognition from an interdisciplinary perspective, including neuroscience,
psychology, computer science, linguistics, and physics:
http://www.cimec.unitn.it/
One of these positions will be in the general area of situated dialogue--more
specifically, in the relation between visual salience and language use. Some of
the issues we are interested in include:
- visual attention and the interpretation of referring expressions
- visual attention shifts as the result of linguistic actions
- the interplay of visual attention and linguistic attention
- visual attention in embodied virtual agents
The research, a collaboration with CIMEC's research groups on Attention and
NeuroImaging, will involve a combination of experimental studies using eye-
tracking and neuroimaging (fMRI, EEG, MEG); analysis of the data using
multimodal annotation techniques; and computational modeling, possibly by
incorporating the resulting model in embodied virtual agents.
We are looking for a student with a background in computational linguistics or
computer science--ideally, with strong background in speech and dialogue--but
interested in empirical and cognitively oriented research, working in a highly
interdisciplinary environment.
The call for PhD positions is expected beginning of June, with deadline around
end of August details will appear at the site:
