MSc/PhD studentships at Dublin City University, Ireland
The Centre for Digital Video Processing (CDVP), Dublin City University,
Ireland is seeking two MSc/PhD research students to join the "IISSCoS:
Improving Indexing for Search of Spontaneous Conversational Speech"
project.
Increasing amounts of digitally recorded audio are becoming available
from many different sources including examples such for as media
materials ranging from traditional broadcast radio and TV to Podcasts
available on the internet, corporate materials and teaching and learning
resources. The full value of much of this material can only be realised
if it is possible to very efficiently search for interesting content.
Given the large volume of material and the high cost of manual
transcription, this requires that it be automatically indexed by
recognising contents and often by assigning labels describing the topics
covered. This recognition process often represents a significant
challenge since much of this material will be spontaneous and/or
conversational spoken content. Current speech recognition systems
typically make large numbers of errors arising from the complexity of
the acoustic signal and their fixed vocabulary. Words outside this
vocabulary cannot be used to search the data, and often assumed context
knowledge means that important concepts are not articulated in the
speech. The IISSCoS project will explore novel methods for improving the
automated speech recognition, indexing and annotation of spoken content
for search applications.
Candidates for these positions should have a first or upper second
degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as engineering or
computing science preferably with an interest in speech technology or
natural language processing.
These studentships are fully funded by Science Foundation Ireland. The
positions are available from 1st September 2008 and the successful
applicants will be expected to take up their position before 1st October
2008.
The CDVP is a very active group conducting research into a wide variety
of search and information management technologies. Full details can be
found at: http://www.cdvp.dcu.ie.
Interested candidates should forward a current CV with names of two
referees and a short note describing their interest in joining the
IISSCoS project, via email to the project investigator Dr Gareth Jones
(Gareth.Jones AT computing.dcu.ie). Informal enquiries are very welcome.
The closing date for applications is 31st July 2008.
