PhD Training Course: Infrastructural tools for the study of linguistic
variation

Time and place
2.-6. June 2009. (Participants are expected to stay the whole period, and
arrive the night before.) Fefor H?ifjellshotell, 3 hours by train from Oslo
airport Gardermoen to Vinstra station, Norway.
Who can attend
The course aims at PhD and research students in language studies and
linguistics. Applicants will be selected according to these criteria:
position/degree, research project and country of home institution.
Application deadline is 15. April, and notification will be given by 25.
April 2009.
Course contents
Its main aim is to highten the awareness of future researchers in the
importance of a thorough and scientific sound use of empirical data. The
course will offer lectures in principles and methods of data collection, and
the students will learn to do annotation ranging from transcription to
grammatical tagging. The course will further show examples of how good data
collections, corpora, have been used for language research, and in
particular, for syntax. The staff are top scholars in linguistics and
language technology, plus technical staff from the UiO Text Laboratory.
Cost
Students from the Nordic countries can participate in the course for free
and get their costs for travelling covered; those from the Baltic countries
can participate in the course for free and have to cover 30% of the costs
for travelling themselves. Course participants from other countries can
participate in the course for free and have to cover the costs for
travelling themselves.
Course credits can be arranged.
