12 November: fyi -- PhD fellowships, Hong Kong
Index of November 2009 | Index of year: 2009 | Full index
The prestigious HK Doctoral Fellowship are sponsored by the HK
government and intended to attract international students with
leadership quality to HK. Although it is understandable that we are
all fighting for good doctoral students, I assume that you won't be
able to accommodate all your master students. I think student with
masters from you (such as your Master in Human Language Technology and
Interfaces and who are interested in the Cihnese context, would be
perfect for our programmes.I also think that the training you give
them will allow them to make a positive impact among students here and
help me to jump start a good eHumanities research programme.
The 135 positions offered by HK government comes with extremely
attractive terms (HK$20,000 tuition free monthly stipend for 3 years,
plus HK$10,000/travel money. 1 euro is roughly 11 hk $ now). This
will be very competitive. What we are doing right now is trying to
identify as many as competitive candidates internationally as
possible. What my faculty (and university) will do is to guarantee
scholarship for any candidate we support (regular stipend now is at HK
$13,500/month but will need to pay for tuition). Hence the students
can be assured of a position by December if s/he is selected by us.
This will be perfect for both those who have finighed master's degree
and who is expecting to finish next summer.
More details are given in attached and enclosed materials, although
please ignore the earlier preliminary deadlines we set.

Dear Colleague,
I am writing to ask you to nominate a potential candidate to the
Faculty of Humanities (FH) of Hong Kong Polytechnic University for
application to the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme. The Scheme was
established by the Hong Kong government in 2009 to attract the best
international students to pursue their doctoral studies in Hong Kong.
Successful awardees to Hong Kong PolyU will receive a tuition-free
monthly stipend of HK $20,000 as well as conference travel allowance.
Further details can be found at
http://www.polyu.edu.hk/ro/hkphd-fellowship/.
Our faculty is the youngest faculty of humanities in Hong Kong, yet is
fast rising. I am enclosing a list of selected colleagues as well as
their research specialties below for your quick reference. A more
complete list can be found at the departmental websites also provided
below. We are looking for potential students with masters degrees, and
preferably with proven research ability, to apply and compete for this
prestigious fellowship.
Please encourage the student to contact his/her intended advisor and to
make an initial submission by 21 August to
Esther.Chung@inet.polyu.edu.hk. The submission should include the
students CV, clear indication of intended supervisor, and a short (one
page) research statement. We will identify a number of potential
candidates by mid-September for our advisors to work with you to prepare
your submission to the Fellowship scheme. By mid-November, each
department will decide on a final shortlist of supported candidates.
Each candidate will be guaranteed with a studentship from the supporting
department if his/her application is not nominated by PolyU to compete
for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme.
Please feel free to pass this information on to any potential
candidates.
Sincerely yours,
Huang Chu-Ren (Prof.)
