The Institute of Language and Communication at the University of
Southern Denmark, Odense Campus, welcomes applications for a fully
funded Ph.D. position on the research area of second language
acquisition. The position is available from February 1st, 2010, or as
soon as possible thereafter.
The applicant will work within a larger project on Usage-Based Second
Language Acquisition, whose overall aim is to examine the complex
interaction between the cognitive and the social aspects involved in
the acquisition and use of foreign languages.
The Ph.D. project will focus on the acquisition of spatial language by
second language learners. Within the theoretical framework of
usage-based linguistics, and by means of longitudinal investigations,
the project should examine the development of L2 constructions for the
expression of physical motion by learners with different linguistic
backgrounds.
The successful applicant is expected to have a masters-degree in
linguistics, applied linguistics, or related fields, and have
knowledge of one or more of the following languages: English, Danish,
Icelandic, or Turkish.
A provisional project description of maximum 5 pages should be
submitted as part of the application for the position. The project
description should include a research plan, a description of the goals
of the project, discussion of relevant theory and method, and a time
schedule for the 3 years.

Engagement as a Ph.D. Research Scholar is for three years. Employment
is automatically terminated at the end of the period. The holder of
the Scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during
the three-year period.
