A management position requiring extensive knowledge of computational
linguistics and natural language processing with strong organizational and
leadership skills. Responsible for planning, designing, implementing,
testing and documenting software modules and linguistic knowledge bases for
a state-of-the-art medical NLP system. Will apply various techniques from
computational linguistics to develop and improve software modules that
perform morphological analysis, tokenization, parsing, and semantic
analysis. Also, responsible for designing and defining system
requirements for complex customer systems and/or preparing studies and
analyzing existing systems. This position requires previous experience in a
management role including project planning, task assignment, and
coordination with QA and product management. The Manager of NLP
Development reports to the Vice President of NLP and New Technology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Leading the development, enhancement, and maintenance of NLP software
thorough documentation of sophisticated algorithms and procedures for
installation and maintenance
- Leading the design and maintenance of domain specific lexical databases
related to medical diagnoses, procedures, and various aspects of medical
encounters
- Coordination with Product Management Team and Software Engineering
Manager to ensure unified development priorities and project plans for
software product enhancements and new product development
- Work closely with subject matter experts to derive, document and
implement product requirements for information extraction and coding logic
across multiple medical specialties
- Apply agile development practices and rigorous quality assurance testing
to ensure high quality results that meet product requirements
- Refining and improving the NLP testing process to produce measurable,
repeatable results that can be applied on a large scale to multiple types
of medical documentation

Qualifications:
- Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree in Linguistics, Cognitive Science,
Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a Computer-related discipline
- Minimum 10-15 years related professional work experience required (at
least 4 years of management experience is required)
- At least 8 years experience designing and implementing NLP technology is
required
- Computational Linguistics: Phonetics, Morphology, Syntax and Semantics;
Cognitive Linguistics; Regular Expressions, BNF Grammars, Natural Language
Processing, Speech Recognition
- Programming languages, at least three of the following: Perl, Python,
Lex, Yacc, Yacc++ and C++
- Experience with rule-based technologies or expert systems
- Applications: Project, Visio, Access and Excel
- Experience with XML and XSLT
- Extensive experience with medical language and vocabulary is required
- System-level linguistic design work of semantic or grammatical
disambiguation will be required, with constant attention to implementation
and a rapid development cycle
- Previous experience in medical informatics or medical coding is highly
desirable
- A demonstrated ability to lead a team and to handle a variety of tasks is
crucial
- Ability to motivate, train and recruit a high-quality NLP team combining
NLP engineering and linguistics staff
- Logical thinker and quick learner with strong problem solving and
analytical ability
- Customer service oriented with a strong commitment to produce high
quality, workable solutions for both internal and external customers
