Dear All,
The Fulbright Commission in Ireland is delighted to announce the 2010-2011 International Science and Technology Award is now open for applications. The closing date for receipt of applications is 30 April 2009. The awards are for fully-funded PhD study in specific science and technology disciplines.
The International Fulbright Science and Technology Award is among the most prestigious international scholarships in science and technology. The Award conveys the message that the U.S. remains the premier destination for serious scientific study and research, and that America not only welcomes top-notch talent, but encourages future leaders to shape their careers through U.S. study.
There have been 2 Irish recipients of the Award to date in Physics (2007-2008) and Anatomy (2009-2010). Winners of 2009 Awards came from 40 countries including Ireland and represent a wide variety of fields in science, technology and engineering, including biology, computer science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, neuroscience, and physics. Thirty-eight percent of the winners were women
Approximately 40 awards will be offered in 2010 ? 2011 to students who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in specific scientific fields [See AREAS OF STUDY below]. They will be enrolled for Ph.D. study at top U.S. universities in the fields of science, technology, or engineering.
Recipients are chosen through a rigorous, multi-tiered, merit-based selection process consisting of in-country competition and review, field and discipline merit review by top-level U.S. academic leaders and nomination by a blue ribbon Advisory Panel, which includes university deans and presidents. Final selection is made by the Presidentially-appointed J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board in Washington, D.C. Award winners are placed at top U.S. institutions, including Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Stanford University.
AREAS OF STUDY
Eligible fields include: aeronautics and aeronautics and astronomics/aeronautical engineering, agriculture (theoretical or research-based focus only), astronomy/planetary sciences, biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, computer sciences/engineering, energy, engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum), environmental science/engineering, geology/earth and atmospheric sciences, information sciences and systems (engineering focus only), materials science/engineering, mathematics, neuroscience/brain and cognitive sciences, oceanography, public health (theoretical research focus only) and physics.
For 2010, agriculture has been included as a new field and while agriculture tends to be a fairly applied field of study, those wishing to pursue theoretical and research-based study in such areas as entomology, plant biology, plant pathology, and soil science are eligible for this Award.
A brief description of each field of study is available at http://foreign.fulbrightonline.org/scienceandtech.
ELIGIBILITY
Candidates who apply through the Fulbright Commission in Ireland must
? -be Irish citizens.
? -be final year undergraduate students who will have completed their undergraduate degree before August 1, 2010.
? -provide a GRE General Exam score report prior to 17th August 2009. A nominee is expected to achieve a quantitative score of at least 700.
? -provide a GRE Subject Exam score report in the following fields of study: biology; biochemistry, cell, and molecular biology; chemistry; computer science; mathematics; and physics. GRE subject testing occurs in October and November of each year.
FUNDING
All grantees receive tuition, a monthly stipend for up to 36 months, health and accident coverage, a book and equipment allowance, professional conference allowance, travel support, and specially tailored enrichment activities, and are eligible to apply for additional research funding. After three years, U.S. universities have agreed to fund the remaining expenses toward completion of a Ph.D.
SELECTION
The initial selection will be made by the Fulbright Commission in Ireland. Interviews for qualified candidates will take place in May 2009. The documentation of a maximum of two nominees and one alternate from Ireland will then be reviewed by a U.S.-based selection committee of prominent academics and professionals in the appropriate scientific fields. Selection of principal and alternate nominees will be determined by September 30, 2009. Candidates will be notified by October 15, 2009.
