2 x Ph.D. Research Studentships

Applications are invited for two funded Ph.D. positions in the
Knowledge and Data Engineering Research Group (KDEG), School of
Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College Dublin. KDEG enjoys a
world-class reputation in the areas of knowledge driven information
systems and intelligent systems. The successful candidate will have an
excellent academic record (first class primary degree or a
postgraduate qualification, e.g. M.Sc.) in Computer Science, or
related discipline. They will be highly motivated, with strong
communication skills and a demonstrated proficiency in software
development. All candidates must be fluent in English, and have good
writing skills. In addition they should satisfy the skills
requirements laid out below for the individual position applied for.


Position #1

The successful candidates will have knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas:

• XML technologies such as SVG, XSLT, XPath and XQuery
• Semantic Web technologies such as Ontologies, Jena, SPARQL
• Web 2.0 Information Visualisation techniques (e.g. OpenGL, Processing)
• Rule-based systems (e.g. Drools, Jess etc)
• Databases / Data mining (e.g. XML DB, RDF store)
• Excellent Java programming skills
• Industrial/Academic Research

Position #2

The successful candidates will have prior exposure to one or more of the following areas:

• Semantic Web Technologies (RDF, OWL, SPARQL, Protégé, Jena)
• Knowledge Engineering (Ontologies, Reasoners, Semantics)

In addition, experience in any of the following would be beneficial:
• Drupal CMS, MySQL, Eclipse, Subversion, PHP and/or Java development
• Network Management
• Industrial/Academic Research

These full-time Ph.D. positions are for three years duration, starting at the latest in October 2009 and are supported under the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Strategic Research Cluster (SRC) programme, comprising several Irish and Multi-national academic and commercial organisations. The successful candidate will have their academic fees paid in full, and will be awarded a tax-free annual stipend of 18,000 euro.
