Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands, offers two PhD positions
in the Dutch national project Infiniti
(http://www.project-infiniti.nl), part of COMMIT
(http://www.commit-nl.nl/). The programme brings together research in
text analytics, search engines optimization, parallel computing,
database technology, interaction in context, embedded systems and
knowledge technology.

The challenge
In dynamic domains such as news, texts contain many new events, and
introduce a relatively high proportion of new entities. Adaptation to
novelty in text is a prerequisite for successful deployment of text
analytics technologies, to fuel systems further along the line, such
as news recommender systems and semantic search
technologies. Adaptation to novel events in news is naturally linked
to the dynamics of social media. Beyond detecting trending topics the
project aims at the detection of higher-level patterns in media that
are indicative of possible future events.
For the ADNEXT project, a cooperation between the Communication and
Information Sciences department and Centre for Language Studies of the
Faculty of Arts at Radboud University Nijmegen and the Netherlands
National News Agency (ANP), we seek two PhD students to approach the
problem from two directions. From the first technological perspective
we try to find out how we can deal with adaptation to novel events and
prediction of future events in time through (social) media; the second
perspective is on the higher-level (and changing) dynamics of what
makes an event a news event. The research will take place in Nijmegen,
with active participation from project partner ANP.
PhD position 1, "Adapting to novelty and time in text analytics": You
should have a MSc or MA degree in computational linguistics, computer
science, artificial intelligence, or an equivalent degree. You should
have good programming skills. Affinity with text analytics, natural
language processing, and machine learning are desirable.
PhD position 2: "The changing dynamics of news": You should have a MA
or MSc degree in communication science, journalism, computational
linguistics, or an equivalent academic degree. You should have
academic-level knowledge of digital media and an affinity with
web/text analytics technologies. Programming skills are desirable.
You must be a team player and must have good written and verbal
communication skills. Knowledge of and some level of proficiency in
Dutch is a plus as much of the data used in the project will be Dutch.
