I hope all is well with you in Dublin!
We have a job opening coming up here in Glasgow and before advertising
to a wider audience I wanted to enquire if any of you had suitable
present/past students you think would be interested in working in
industry and would be willing to move to Glasgow. The role is for a
Product Support Developer in the Collins Language team. Depending on the
candidate, the role could be tailored to be either a senior or junior
position.
The responsibilities and skills required would include the following:
- Processing and manipulation of complex dictionary data in
XML: would require strong skills in XML, XSLT and Perl as well as
ability to work with complex lexical semantic structures; also
experience with character encodings and non-Roman languages would be
useful here
- Design of DTDs and data structures for lexical information:
skills as above
- Building and analysis of large corpora; development of tools
for corpus analysis: skills as above as well as database (mySQL), POSP
tagger etc experience
- Administration of one or more Unix servers: strong Unix/Linux
expertise
- Development and/or project management of digital language
products including online, apps, ebooks etc.
- Sourcing and evaluation of third party software and tools
- Communication with and management of third party vendors
- Requirements analysis: skills include technical knowledge as
well as the ability to communicate with non-technical colleagues e.g.
editors, lexicographers etc
- Management of schedules, project budgets and freelancers:
skills include good time management, ability to write clear briefs for
freelancers etc
- If senior, then management of one or more direct reports:
skills include the ability to manage people, assign workload etc
- If senior, then recommendation and implementation of best
practice/processes for the division
Other skills: ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines;
knowledge of one or more languages other than English would also be of
benefit.
