6 September: fyi -- phd funding, Aberdeen

Index of September 2012 | Index of year: 2012 | Full index

Dear all - We've recently received funding for a PhD scholarship at
Aberdeen University and were wondering if you knew of any suitable
candidates. We expect that additional studentships will be available
in future years. For the current studentship, we'd like someone
who can start within the next few months (which I realise could
be difficult given that the academic year is just starting)

The Aberdeen NLG group is one of the largest and most active NLG
groups in the world, for more information see
http://www.abdn.ac.uk/ncs/computing/research/nlg/

The studentship will be for 3.5 years, with a stipend which
is 4000 UKP above the EPSRC base stipend; eg, stipend would be
17590 UKP (tax-free) for 2012-2013. There also will be
dedicated funding for travel and operational expenses. The
current funding is for UK/EU students, but we're happy
to explore options with non-EU students. It may be possible
for the student to work part-time at our spinout company
(www.data2text.com) if he/she wishes to further increase
income and/or get industrial experience.

Topic areas should be related to data-to-text (as an academic
subfield, not what the company Data2Text is doing today).
Possibilities include
* Generating descriptions of motion
* NLG and "big data", for example in finance
* Experimental comparisons of the utility of NLG texts and
information graphics
* Better techniques for generating good narratives
* Multilingual generation
* Knowledge acquisition and modelling for NLG
We're very open to considering other topics as well!

If you know of anyone who might be interested in this,
please ask them to informally contact Ehud Reiter
(e.reiter@abdn.ac.uk).

Thanks
Ehud
