Two PhD positions on Language and Emotion

The Tilburg center for Cognition and Communication (TiCC) a Center of Excellence at Tilburg University (TiU), invites applications for two PhD positions on a new research project funded by The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO): Producing affective language: Content selection, message formulation and computational modeling.

This project will study the influence of emotion on language production, working from the hypothesis that emotion influences all aspects of the speech production process. Specifically, we ask both whether content selection (“deciding what to say”) and message formulation (“deciding how to say it”) are affected by emotional appraisals of the language user.

The NWO project consists of two subprojects:

(1) how the emotional states of speakers influence the language they produce and
(2) how the influence of emotion on language production can be modeled in computational tools for affective natural language generation.

The two PhDs at Tilburg University will work on the first subproject. The results of their experiments will feed into the development of a novel automatic news report generation tool that can adjust the message depending on the emotion it is intended to reflect (e.g., a report of the same match from the perspective of a losing team can be different from the report for the winning team). This second subproject will be carried out at University of Twente, in close collaboration with Tilburg University.

Requirements

For the positions we seek candidates with a background in a relevant discipline, including (in alphabetical order) Affective Science, Cognitive Science, Communication & Information Sciences, Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, Psychology, or a related area.

The PhD candidates have a (Research) Master’s degree in one of the aforementioned areas, a strong interest in doing research, excellent writing skills and a good command of English. In addition, the candidates have proven experience with experimental research, and are well-versed in statistical techniques. An interest in computational modeling is considered an advantage, but is not required.

Information

For more information on these positions, please contact dr. Martijn Goudbeek (m.b.goudbeek@uvt.nl, +31134663587) or prof.dr. Emiel Krahmer (E.J.Krahmer@uvt.nl, +31134663070). The full project proposal is available upon request.

What we offer

Tilburg University is rated among the top Dutch employers, offering excellent terms of employment. The collective labour agreement of Tilburg University applies. The PhD projects will be carried within the Tilburg center for Cognition and Communication (TiCC), one of the five centers of excellence at Tilburg University. TiCC combines two strong research programs: Creative Computing (CC), including research in Artificial Intelligence, Computational Linguistics, and Intelligent Systems, and Language, Communication and Cognition (LCC), including research in Cognitive Science, Communication and Discourse Studies. The unique combination of these two research programs enables TiCC to work on research projects in which computer-based techniques of modelling and processing (big) data are combined with experimentally elicited human data.

The PhD candidates will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as a PhD-student (promovendus) with a starting salary of € 2.125,-- gross per month in the first year, up to € 2.717,-- in the fourth year (amounts fulltime). The selected candidates will start with a contract for one year, concluded by an evaluation. Upon a positive outcome of the first-year evaluation, the candidate will be offered an employment contract for the remaining three years. It is also possible to work 80% instead of fulltime. The selected candidate is expected to have written a PhD thesis by the end of the contract (which may be based on articles).
